Introduction

Just a week after the launch of two Ryzen 9000 series desktop processors based on the Zen 5 architecture with single CCD configurations, two higher-end Ryzen 9 models with dual CCDs quickly followed. Among them, the flagship Ryzen 9 9950X retains the original naming convention and continues to feature a full 16-core setup.

Product Specifications

As part of the Zen 5 architecture, the Ryzen 9 9950X also utilizes a chiplet design, comprising two complete CCDs, each with 8 cores, manufactured using TSMC’s 4nm FinFET process. Each CCD has 16MB of L3 cache, totaling 32MB, and supports PCIe 5.0, offering 28 PCIe lanes and 4 USB 3.2 Gen 2 10Gbps expansion ports. The integrated RDNA 2 architecture provides a graphics core with a base frequency of 2200MHz and 2 compute units, delivering basic graphics processing capabilities.

Compared to the previous generation Ryzen 9 7950X, the base clock frequency of the Ryzen 9 9950X has been reduced to 4.30GHz, while the maximum boost frequency remains at 5.70GHz. The TDP is still rated at 170W, but unlike the Ryzen 9 7950X and the 170W preset in AMD Eco Mode, the default PPT power limit for the Ryzen 9 9950X has been increased to 200W, providing a higher performance threshold than the previous limit of 230W.

Performance Evaluation

In single-threaded performance, the Ryzen 9 9950X scores around 2000 points in Cinebench R23, while its multi-threaded score reaches 25000 points, approximately 1.7 times that of the Ryzen 7 9700X. This processor excels in productivity applications that rely on multi-threading, matching or even exceeding the performance of the 14th Gen Core i7 and i9, which have a significant number of E cores.

In gaming, the Ryzen 9 9950X performs similarly to the Ryzen 7 9700X and competes well with rivals in most scenarios. At 1080p and 1440p resolutions, it maintains stable frame rates, providing a smooth gaming experience.
